Memories Of Dani Jarque – Andres Iniesta

Dani Jarque is a Spanish football player who passed away on August 8, 2009 due to a heart attack. He was only 26 then. Spain wins by Andres Iniesta’s 116th minute winning score. He gave tribute to Dani Jarque by taking his jersey off to reveal a handwritten “Dani Jarque siempre con nostros” which means “Dani Jarque always with us”. Iniesta was booked for removing his jersey, I’m sure he won’t worry about it too much. He won the World Cup and paid homage to a deceased friend/colleague. Adding another yellow card won’t make a difference if you won the World Cup, but this incident makes me think that maybe shirt removal bookings should be dependent on quality of underlying t-shirt message.

I believe you are right: the message on the undershirt should be evaluated before booking the player. All athletes are role models for our young, and those exhibiting positive messages on their undershirt -like Iniesta- should be commended instead of sanctioned. It was refreshing, humbling and deeply moving to see that even in his moment of triumph he could remember and honor a beloved colleague no longer alive.
